Does 432 Hz have healing benefits?
Separate musical tuning, listener preference and findings from small trials.
The key idea
A=440 Hz is the international concert standard. A=432 Hz traces to Sauveur’s 1713 “scientific pitch” and was popularized in the 1980s.
Follow the process
- 1Concert pitch A4 = 440 Hz
- 2Sauveur pitch C4 = 256 Hz, A4 = 430.54 Hz
- 3Modern alternative A4 = 432 Hz
Heart rate (Calamassi & Pomponi, 2019).
A double-blind crossover trial with 33 people found identical music tuned to 432 Hz lowered mean heart rate by 4.79 bpm compared with 440 Hz, with slight drops in blood pressure and breathing rate.
Dental anxiety and cortisol (Aravena et al., 2020).
Both tunings reduced anxiety before tooth extraction compared with no music. The 432 Hz group had lower salivary cortisol (0.49 µg/dL) than 440 Hz (1.35) and control (1.59).
Sleep.
A double-blind pilot with 12 spinal cord injury patients found improved sleep scores with 432 Hz music (+3.6, p = 0.02) and no improvement with 440 Hz.
Why it happens.
Lowering pitch by about a third of a semitone softens the upper harmonics and warms the timbre. Preference, expectation and association also shape the response. It is psychoacoustics, not a universal healing constant.
Tuning can change how music feels. That is why we test how people respond instead of trusting a label.
